I’m a graphic novelist and artist based in Oakland, California.

I was raised in Enumclaw, Washington, and I’ve been drawing and telling stories since childhood. Narrative is the thread that runs through everything I make, from the worlds you enter in my graphic novels to the larger, unseen stories suggested by my visual art. My work braids genres and draws inspiration from a circle of kindred spirits: filmmakers like David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick; writers like H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King; cartoonists like Daniel Clowes and Charles Burns; painters like Edward Hopper and Eric White; and photographers like Diane Arbus and Ralph Eugene Meatyard.

I hold a BFA from Occidental College and an MFA from the Yale School of Art. I’m the author of Bering Strait, Eric, Runoff, and Racecar, and my work has been featured in the Los Angeles Review of Books and HuffPost.

“One of the most important cartoonists of his generation.”

-Colin Blanchete, Canon Magazine

“Tom Manning is an unassuming, but brilliant comic book creator. Revealed in a slow burn and always mind bending, his books seemingly defy categorization and are strictly for thinking readers.”

- Fanboy Confidential

“May we all get poisoned by Tom Manning more often.”

-Guillermo Del Toro
